Graduate course work used to meet degree requirements must be completed satisfactorily within a period of six years immediately preceding conferral of a master's degree and eight years for a doctoral degree. A course completed outside of those time limits for degree conferral must be evaluated to determine if it meets current degree requirements. A graduate program may set shorter time limitations that are consistent with disciplinary currency in the field. Students approved to transfer credit from another institution or to return to Duquesne University after a break in enrollment in a graduate or professional program may be asked to re-take certain courses to validate their subject knowledge or otherwise demonstrate mastery. The decision about whether a student will need to re-take any courses is made initially at the time of resuming studies given the student's expected conferral date but may be revisited should an absence extend the student's degree completion date.
