Global Bioethics: Perspectives, Problems and Solutions

Duquesne University's Center for Global Health Ethics and the James F. Drane Bioethics Institute at PennWest University will hold the first biannual conference on Global Bioethics from November 7-9th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the current globalized world, many challenges and issues need solutions at a global level that transcends disciplinary, regional and even national boundaries. The field of bioethics can play a crucial role in understanding such issues and finding reasonable and applicable solutions for them.
The Duquesne-PennWest Conference on Global Bioethics provides a platform for leaders, scholars, activists, policymakers, stakeholders and students to shed light on different aspects of global bioethics, discuss their ideas and research projects, create networks and alliances, and learn about the groundbreaking theoretical and practical ideas in the field. All topics related to global bioethics are welcome to be shared, analyzed and discussed at this conference, including the ethical theories and principles guiding global bioethics; and the bioethical aspects of globalization, the Global Governance for Health, the role of global and international organizations, the health consequences of Global warming, COVID-19 pandemics, disease control at the global level, international research collaborations, health inequality and other related topics.

Dr. Keisha Ray
Professor Keisha Ray received her PhD in philosophy from the University of Utah. She is currently a tenured Associate Professor and holds the John P. McGovern, MD Professorship of Oslerian Medicine at the McGovern Center for Humanities & Ethics at UT Health Houston. Most of Dr. Ray’s work focuses on the effects of institutional racism on Black people's health, highlighting Black people's own stories, and the sociopolitical implications of biomedical enhancement. Based on her expertise, Dr. Ray is frequently called upon as a bioethics expert for popular news sources. Dr. Ray is also the author of the book “Black Health: The Social, Political, and Cultural Determinants of Black People's Health" with Oxford University Press.
Dr. Henk ten Have
Henk ten Have studied medicine and philosophy and worked at the Universities of Maastricht and Nijmegen, as Director of the Division of Ethics of Science and Technology of UNESCO in Paris, and as a Professor of Healthcare Ethics and Director in the Center for Healthcare Ethics at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Since 2021 he has been a Research Professor at the Faculty of Bioethics, Anahuac University Mexico. His latest books are Bioethics, Healthcare and the Soul (2022), Bizarre bioethics – ghosts, monsters and pilgrims (2022), and The Covid-19 pandemic and global bioethics (2022).
Dr. Olinda Timms
Olinda Timms is a professor in the Division of Health and Humanities at St Johns Research Institute in Bangalore, India. A professional medical Anaesthesiologist, with training and teaching experience in Medical Ethics and Bioethics, her book "Biomedical Ethics" 2016 (Elsevier 2ed) serves as resource for doctors and medical colleges. Dr Timms is Working Editor of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics and co-founder of the CCBI Bioethics Forum, India. She also was a James F. Drane Bioethics Fellow (Edinboro University) 2019.
Conference Details
Registration is required for attending the conference. The registration fee is $75. The registration fee will include access to the conference, coffee, a reception on Thursday, and lunch and dinner on Friday. The registration fee will be waived for students of Duquesne University and PennWest whose abstract has been accepted. The registration deadline is November 1st.
We welcome the submission of abstracts that fall within the broad topic of global bioethics, including, but not limited to, the ethical theories and principles guiding global bioethics, the bioethical aspects of globalization, the Global Governance for Health, the role of global and international organizations, the health consequences of Global warming, COVID-19 pandemics, disease control at the global level, international research collaborations, and health inequality. Abstracts may be structured or unstructured but should be no longer than 250 words. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is August 1, 2024. Presenters will be informed about the decision regarding their abstract by August 15, 2024. Please clink on the link below to submit your abstract.
