Amid FAFSA Uncertainty, Duquesne Providing Financial Aid Planning Information

“We know it’s been tough for families—because we’re hearing it firsthand,” said Joel Bauman, Duquesne’s senior vice president for enrollment management. “We understand why many, many colleges and universities are extending deadlines as a step to help give more time to families. But we think the most helpful thing is to provide them with all the information we can. That’s what Duquesne is doing.”  

Duquesne uses highly accurate financial estimator tools to give students and families a very reliable picture of what the cost of attendance could be for them. To date, more than 7,500 students who have been admitted to Duquesne have already received estimated financial aid packages from the University.  

While the federal government is providing some news and updates, complete information for federal financial aid amounts is still not available due to delays getting FAFSA information to universities.  

“We make two things very clear: we’re providing estimates and they’re very reliable. And by doing it now and not waiting, families can start their financial planning conversations with us right away,” Bauman said. “They can attend our virtual financial aid sessions and get a clearer picture. Extending deadlines is nice, but it may prolong the period of uncertainty for families and can actually make things more stressful.”  

In addition to providing estimates, Duquesne is committing to provide estimates to any new applicants who are admitted: 

• Students can apply and, if admitted, get a financial aid package with a planning worksheet, information about payment plans, scholarships and other ways to manage the financial investment.  
• Students who have completed the FAFSA can send that information to Duquesne and get a complete financial aid package.
• For students from Pennsylvania, Duquesne offers a PA State Grant Matching Program.  

Bauman notes that Duquesne invests $79.5 million in undergraduate students each year through University-based scholarships, and total aid from all sources exceeds $195 million. The University anticipates actual FAFSA data to be processed shortly and financial aid offer letters to be released mid-April.
