Biography
After earning his B.A. and M.A. at Jilin University, Jing "Jay" Li worked at the Institute of Modern History, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, where he conducted research on the history of Sino-American relations. In the U.S. he received his doctoral degree in history from Rice University. At Duquesne University Li teaches courses in East Asian history, Chinese history, Japanese history, the history of Sino-Western and U.S.-East Asian relations.

Research Interests or Expertise
In research Li focuses on U.S.-China relations and the political and cultural history
of modern China. His monograph, China's America: The Chinese View the United States,
1900-2000 (The SUNY Press, 2011) examines how, in the context of their own national
struggle, different sociopolitical groups of the Chinese perceived and interpreted
the U.S.A. as a polity, culture, and world power. The study demonstrates that China's
century-long internal contention over what to make of America well reflects the Chinese
people's endeavor to reshape their own national identify in the modern age. The book
was named one of the Choice Magazine's Top 25 Academic Books of the Year (2011). Li's
interest in Sino-Western cultural relations and comparative studies has also led to
the first Chinese translation of E. M. Delafield's Diary of A Provincial Lady (SDX
Join Press, 2017). Currently Li is engaged in a study that examines Chinese lives
in Mao's Communist Revolution.
