Biography
Dan Gilman currently serves as Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to Duquesne University President Ken Gormley.
Prior to his appointment at Duquesne, Gilman served as Chief of Staff to Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto. In that role, he was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the City, including management of the City's 3,400 person workforce, the City's legislative agenda, strategic communications, and community engagement strategy.
Gilman also served on Pittsburgh City Council representing the 8th District. As a Councilman, he focused on creating a more accountable city government, embracing Pittsburgh's technological renaissance in order to improve City services, and making Pittsburgh a more family-friendly and progressive city.
In addition, Gilman sponsored the following legislation to enhance and expand City services for immigrants and refugees:
- Create lactation rooms in city buildings
- Prohibit housing-related discrimination against an individual based on their status as a victim of domestic violence
- Prohibit discrimination against pregnant women in the workplace
- Prohibit questions about salary history on City job applications to help reduce the gender wage gap
- Install free sunscreen dispensers throughout city parks
- The City for All agenda.
He also sponsored a package of ordinances to create a truly independent City Ethics Board and strengthen the City's campaign finance laws.
Gilman has received many awards and accolades for his hard work. He was selected to join The New DEAL, a national network committed to highlighting pragmatic progressives with innovative ideas at the state and local level. He also served as the Chair of the National League of Cities (NLC) University Communities Council. Gilman has also been recognized as one of Pittsburgh's "40 Under 40" by Pittsburgh Magazine and Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project, as well as one of Pittsburgh's "50 Finest" by Whirl Magazine.
An alumnus of Pittsburgh's Shady Side Academy, Gilman graduated with honors from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in Ethics, History, and Public Policy.
